Charlemagne
Charlemagne
Charlemagne (also known as Charles the Great) was a European King from 768 to 814. Charlemagne became King of the Franks in 771 after his brother died. Charlemagne wanted to unite all Germanic peoples into one kingdom and convert them all to Christianity. Charlemagne spent most of his reign engaged in warfare to succeed in his goals. When Charlemagne died in 814, he had already taken over most of Western Europe and ensured the survival of Christianity.
When Charlemagne won the three-decade-long battle against the Saxons, he issued a law saying if you did not get Baptised or follow Christian beliefs, you would be put to death (The Saxons were pagan).
Charlemagne gave money and land to the Catholic Church and had armies to protect the popes. On December 25 800, as a way to acknowledge Charlemagne’s power, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne emperor of the Romans
Charlemagne inspired leaders such as Napoleon Bonaparte and Adolf Hitler who wanted to rule a unified Europe.
