Castles
CastlesThe Middle Ages inhabited hundreds of fascinating castles all throughout Europe. Castles were built to defend a location and house Kings, Queens and Nobles. Until 1066, England didn't have any castles, they were introduced by the Normans after the Normans won the Battle of Hastings. When castles were first made, they were made from timber but after realising timber structures don’t last long under attacks, the material to make castles was switched to stone.
The castles were usually located at the top of a hill, for a good vantage point and throw things down at attackers easily. For extra protection castles were often built with moats around them. Inside a castle there was usually a chapel, a hall and a keep, which is storage space for food and supplies in case of a siege. Famous castles that were built in the medieval era were the Tower of London, Warwick Castle, Leeds Castle, Windsor Castle, Caernarfon Castle and the Chateau Gaillard. |
